Analysis

Challenge

The main task is to create a new e-book reader application that will meet the needs of modern readers by providing them with a personalized reading experience and the opportunity to discuss books in the community. The app includes key features such as personalization, recommendations, shared reading (a place where you can share emotions and put a rating) and a reading interface.

Problem

In today's world, there is a significant issue related to the unbalanced consumption of paper books and their production. The production of paper books requires substantial resources, including wood for paper and energy for printing and transportation. This leads to high carbon emissions and negative environmental impacts. Additionally, paper books take up space and can be limited in availability in certain regions, causing difficulties for those seeking access to knowledge and literature.

Solution

Developing an e-book reading application helps reduce environmental impact and ensures convenient access to books, promoting environmental sustainability and knowledge accessibility.

The main goal was to create a satisfying and effective user experience by considering the following principles and values during the design process:

  • Understanding User Needs

  • Ease of Use

  • Effective Navigation

  • Visual Appeal

  • Personal Adaptation

  • Feedback and Iterations

  • Security and Confidentiality

Analysis Main Competitors:

I used the main competitors in this field. I analyzed what customers think about design, whether they are happy with application development, etc. Research has shown that each application has strengths and weaknesses.

I have attached screenshots of the applications themselves, customer reviews, and evaluation of applications on the site https://play.google.com/

(We have also added our comments in green, yellow, and red.)

After that, I collected all the benefits, uniqueness, disadvantages, and everything I need to consider when creating an application.

Main takeaways from this analysis:

Since I was oriented and took and summarized reviews on the best applications, my conclusion will be based on them. And so, thanks to my research, the best reading apps provide instant access to extensive libraries, customizable reading capabilities, and synchronization between devices; users praise diverse content, personalized recommendations, and community engagement. Audiobook quality, technical support, and offline access are also welcome. These apps adapt to user preferences and have revolutionized reading habits. They also have a simplified interface that starts with a regular intro and gradually shows the entire instrumental. The color palette is modest and warm, and light graphics and simple animation are acceptable. Our design will be based on these principles.

Survey

Defining the target audience: Survey

User interviews are of utmost importance in guiding the design process, confirming assumptions, and guaranteeing that our apps provides a smooth and enjoyable reading experience.

The first thing I did was create a Google form to conduct a survey and ask key questions for potential users:

Conclusion:

The majority of respondents (more than 55%) were between the ages of 18 and 30, and less (39%) between the ages of 30 and 60. According to the survey results, the majority of respondents reported that they read once a week, More than 50% of participants specified that they read books on a smartphone. while a similar percentage reported using electronic reading apps. Also, most readers read in the evening (We will use this information in the UI design to create a night mode of the application).

These results provide valuable information about the reading habits and preferences of the interviewees, guiding the development of initiatives to improve the reading experience and develop book-sharing communities. Types of users were identified and a more in-depth interview was conducted.

Interview

A deeper interview with users who have had real experience using electronic applications for reading books:

Conclusion:

A comprehensive study and analysis of the reviews of our applications revealed an outstanding archetype of the user. The goal was to gain an in-depth understanding of how users interact with similar applications and to identify recurring traits or common characteristics among different segments of users.

User Flow

The onboarding procedure is tailored to offer each user a customized experience, enabling them to tailor their experience to their individual reading habits, favourite genres, and preferred reading devices.

Upon registration, users will be led through a set of carefully designed inquiries that explore their reading inclinations and the specific features they desire within the app.

Prototyping

After users successfully register, they will undergo a seamless onboarding experience, where they will be led through a carefully designed set of questions. These inquiries explore their reading preferences and the specific features they seek within the application.

I divided all the management into 4 stages: Home Screen, Library, Search and account.

In these sections, you can choose a book on a topic (history, science, comedy, and so on), add a book to your wish list, or buy it right away. In the "My Books" section, you can view all the recently added books, see the read status, and add a review and rating to the book.

In the search you can find the book via keywords and to see what the e-reader to suggest to your request

I divided the account block into 4 sub-items, and also added the function of editing personal account information.

4 sub-items: activity, rewards, purchases, settings

Also a separately designed view of itself and the reader.

Here you can see general information about the book (description, number of pages, how many have already been read, as well as see reviews from other users.

The reader itself is simplified and minimized to help the reader be in focus and not be distracted by extraneous elements.

UI DESIGN

A visual design was developed in warm colors. These colors were chosen because these are the closest colors that are associated with a white page in a book. I assume that a person's direct association with reading is still closely related to a physical subject. I also added some modern visual solutions, such as vector images with people. These images add some comfort and empathy to the user in order to cause him to trust the application. The lines of the pictures are smooth and long, and the colors echo the selected color scheme of the entire application.
